After a decade of steady work, Dakota found himself at an unexpected crossroads. When the local factory where he had worked for ten years closed its doors, he faced a challenge that many Missouri workers know all too well — rebuilding after a layoff that was no fault of his own.
Rather than settling for uncertainty, Dakota took action. He turned to the West Central Job Center to explore what a new career path could look like, bringing with him a clear interest in the transportation industry and a determination to find work that would last.
Working alongside his Career Coach, Dakota was connected with WIOA funding — a federal workforce program designed to help individuals access quality training and re-enter the workforce in high-demand fields. With that support, he enrolled in CDL training at True CDL in Nevada, Missouri, and got to work earning the credentials that would open the door to a stronger future.
The results came quickly. Within just a few weeks of obtaining his CDL, Dakota was hired by Canadian Pacific Kansas City, one of North America’s leading freight rail companies. He began company training in February 2026 with a starting wage of $38.00 an hour — and upon completing all required training, he will advance to $45.00 an hour.
That’s not just a new job. That’s a career with long-term financial security for Dakota and his family.
Dakota’s story is a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when workforce resources, career coaching, and personal determination work together. Through the West Central Region Job Center and the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, individuals facing displacement can find real pathways into growing industries with wages that make a difference.
Through services available at Missouri Job Centers across the state, individuals like Dakota can access training opportunities, career guidance, and pathways into high-demand industries that strengthen both families and local communities.
Congratulations, Dakota, on your success!
