Two determined veterans in the West Central Region have successfully transitioned from military service to careers in law enforcement, thanks to support from the West Central Region Job Center in Sedalia and funding through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

Jack Thompson, a proud U.S. Army veteran, first learned about WIOA during an interview while pursuing a career in law enforcement. Although highly motivated, Jack lacked the required credentials to enter the field. With guidance from his Career Coach at the Job Center, he enrolled in the WIOA program and qualified for the Quest Dislocated Worker Grant, which fully funded his training at the University of Central Missouri Police Academy.

Throughout his training, Jack demonstrated the discipline and perseverance developed during his military service. He stayed in regular contact with his Career Coach and actively pursued opportunities in law enforcement. His dedication paid off when he was hired as a jailer with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department.

On December 11, 2025, Jack graduated from the Police Academy and was immediately promoted to Sheriff’s Deputy. Reflecting on his journey, Jack shared his gratitude, saying, “Thank you so much for all your help.”

Dru Weddle, a U.S. Navy veteran, came to the West Central Region Job Center as a reverse referral from the City of Sedalia Police Department with a clear goal: to become a police officer. With prior experience as a jailer and corrections officer, Dru was an excellent candidate for the WIOA program.

After completing all eligibility requirements and qualifying for the Quest Dislocated Worker Grant, Dru also attended the University of Central Missouri Police Academy. On December 11, 2025, he proudly graduated and officially stepped into his new role as a police officer with the City of Sedalia Police Department.

Jack and Dru’s stories highlight how the West Central Region Job Center connects motivated individuals—especially veterans—to training, resources, and career pathways that lead to long-term success. Through WIOA funding and personalized career coaching, the Missouri Job Center continues to help individuals turn ambition into achievement while strengthening communities across the region.

Congrats, Jack & Dru!
